The Government of Canada lists a lot of ways to prepare for an earthquake.
There are 3 examples that you can do or remind your family to do
First, teach everybody in the family, if they are old enough, how to turn off the water and electricity
Bennett in 19 explains that this is because of the strong ground movement and it may damage your pipelines and cause a leak. An undetected gas leak could lead to an explosion or fire which is undesirable, especially during an earthquake.
Second, secure heavy electronics and major appliances to walls, such as refrigerators
ICLR finds that appliances may be attached to water and/or gas lines that can cause serious damage to the structure if the line is severed.
Furthermore, securing appliances to walls can prevent big heavy appliances falling over during an earthquake that can block the way or harm a person.
Third, keep flammable items and household chemicals away from heat and where they are less likely to spill
This way it’s much less likely a fire would break out, magnifying the issue.
The list to do in preparation for an earthquake goes on and on, go onto The Government of Canada’s website to learn more.
