Ready.gov in 21 explains that there are a few things to take note of during a power failure.
First, Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.
BC hydro in 15 explains that a fridge or freezer that's unplugged isn't immediately warm; the door helps seal cold temperatures inside. By keeping the door shut, you can dramatically slow down the warming and keep food at a safe cool temperature for much longer.
Second, Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
NASD finds a gas oven may go out or burn inefficiently, leading to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Third, Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges
Safe electricity explains this will help to eliminate damage to your appliances from voltage surges when the electricity is restored.
Most importantly, stay calm and don’t panic.
In the case of a power failure or power outage, call 1 800 BC HYDRO
In the case where a downed power line, stay back 10 meters and dial 911. If the power line falls on your car do the same thing but stay in the car.
